       .... an international, biennial celebration of fiberarts sponsored by the Western North Carolina Fibers / Handweavers Guild

The purpose of the Blue Ridge Fiber Show is to encourage and support handloom weavers, spinners and felters at all levels and to increase public awareness of their work.

The Blue Ridge Fiber Show defines fiber art to incude:

 

Weaving

Includes textiles created on an Entrant-controlled loom and involves interlacing (not inter-looping) two or more sets of elements at right or oblique angles to each other.

Spinning Plant, animal or synthetic fibers twisted together to form yarn Characteristics of spun yarn vary based on the material used, fiber length and alignment, quantity of fiber used and degree of twist.
Felting

Technique that produces a non-woven sheet of matted material which is most frequently made from woool, hair or fur created by the entanglement of a mass of fibers that takes place when heat, moisture and pressure are combined.  Includes needle felting.  "Fulling" (generally created by knitting and thenput in washer to full) is excluded.

 







 

6 Entry Categories

  • Accessories (wearable) - scarves, shawls, purses, jewelry, liturgical, etc.
  • Decorative Functional (home decor) - linens, rugs, pillows, afghans, etc; excludes off-loom basketry
  • Decorative Non-Functional - wall hangings (other than tapestries), 3-D work, etc; excludes off-loom basketry
  • Constructed Clothing - garments made from at least 75% handwoven cloth, felted cloth or by knitting with handspun.
  • Yardage - minimum 18 in (45.7 cm) width, 3 yards (2.7m) length. Maximum 60 in (1.5m) width, 10 yards (9.1m) length, 40 pounds (18.1 Kg) weight. Entry must include an 8x8 in (20.3 cm square) handling piece. 
  • Tapestries - weft-faced textile using discontinuous wefts.
    • Example:  A felted or handwoven coat would be in the Clothing Category.  A sweater from the entrant's handspun fiber would also be considered in the Cothing Category.

 

How to Register:

  • Click the blue button (link) at the top right of the screen that says "Register."
  • Create an account / user profile, including a password.  Keep this for future logons.
  • Once logged in, you will see "My Application Page." EACH piece must be entered separately.
  • SEE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON ENTERING.

Judging Criteria for all categories are:

  • Design: interest, proportion, shape and color.
  • Fiber / Structure / Material: suitable for design, structure and purpose.
  • Finishing: quality of finishing technique, appropriateness for design, structure and fiber.
  • Craftsmanship: technical execution.
  • Originality: The "WOW" factor, unique.
